Congratulations to Brian P (again - yawn !)

Technical Info: Canon SX1 IS - set on P (program) zoom=180mm 1/500sec @f4.5

The story behind the photo
Trevithick day was wet this year so I took my "second camera" a Canon SX1 IS, wrapped in a plastic bag. This was my best shot to the day taken and the steam engines set off on their parade around the town. I tried to capture the atmospheric nature of the driver through the steam. This was the best of six photos taken in rapid succession. I felt it had just the right amount of steam.

  • Monthly Theme - March  "Wildlife" Congratulations to Brian P

Technical Info: Sony a350 180mm 1/250sec @f8

The story behind the photo
I had been watching this female chaffinch visiting out garden over several days but my efforts to photograph it had been fruitless. So I bought some mealworms and put them in a hanging basket and over a two or three days the chaffinch go used to feeding from there. I was then able to hake this shot handheld through the open patio doors as she came to feed one day.

  • Monthly Theme - February  "Slow Shutter Speed" Congratulations to Brian P

Technical Info: Sony a350 35mm 20sec @f32 with NDx8 filter

The story behind the photo
Over a week I visited Godrevy three times in differing light conditions and experimented with different combinations of shutter speed and aperture. This particular photo was taken at about 3:30 on a February afternoon. There was a moderate south-westerly wind. With the camera mounted on a tripod and positioned on the rocks near the National Trust Car Park, I took a number of shots. I kept the tripod at its lowest height to prevent it catching the wind and used the camera's self timer to keep camera shake to a minimum. With my Sony a350 set to ISO 100 and on aperture priority I set my 18-250 zoom to 35mm and stopped it right down to f32, to allow an even slower shutter I used a Cokin ND8 filter and was able to bring the shutter speed down to about 20sec and blur the sea nicely.
